Our History
AHEPA began developing Section 202 housing for low income elderly in 1980. AHEPA's first affordable senior apartment community, known as AHEPA 53 Apartments, is still located in St. Louis, Missouri. This first apartment community, funded in September 1980, was ready for occupancy by April 1982. The name AHEPA 53 Apartments reflects the local AHEPA chapter that was instrumental in obtaining the funding for these senior apartments. Still in operation, AHEPA 53 Apartments added two additional apartment phases in its mission to continue to provide affordable housing for low income seniors.
Based on the success of this initial effort, the AHEPA National Housing Corporation (ANHC) was formed to act as the official sponsor and development vehicle of Section 202 elderly affordable housing. ANHC was chartered as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1983. Through its sponsorship and assistance to local AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope chapters, the AHEPA Housing program has grown to its present size of nearly 4,700 apartments situated within 86 individual senior apartment communities, spanning 21 states. In 1991, due to the tremendous results and fast growth of its senior housing program, ANHC formed a wholly owned subsidiary, the AHEPA Management Company (AMC), to manage these apartment communities. ANHC could now concentrate its efforts on the development of new markets and apartment communities, as well as the overall administration of its growing housing program.
ANHC Board members are the presidents of each of the operating chapter housing owner corporations. Annually, it elects officers and directors who make up the executive board. The AHEPA housing program, through the vision and hard work of early volunteers, rapidly developed into a premier provider of affordable housing. Its plans for the future outline a continued path of expansion and growth by assisting more AHEPA family chapters to participate in this highly worthwhile program that has become instrumental in providing much needed affordable housing for low and modest income senior citizens.
Over the next decade, tens of thousands more seniors are expected to need affordable housing. AHEPA National Housing Corporation expects to continue its prominent leadership role, as it has for a quarter century, of fulfilling this vital need to America's senior citizens.
