AHEPA MANAGEMENT COMPANY’S LINDA DUNCAN SELECTED AS FACULTY
FOR NCOA-ASA JOINT CONFERENCE
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – AHEPA Management Company, an Indianapolis, IN-based property management firm for affordable senior housing communities, has announced that Linda Duncan, Assistant Vice President, has been selected to serve as faculty for Aging in America, the National Council on Aging–American Society on Aging Joint Conference which will be held April 26-30, 2011 in San Francisco, CA.
A nationally respected gerontologist, Ms. Duncan will be presenting a workshop entitled “Aging, Wellness and the Arts: Changing the Face of Health and Wellness Programming.” According to Ms. Duncan, the “Aging, Wellness, and the Arts” program is a reproducible model of health programming that provides opportunities in creativity which have the potential to increase health and wellness of aging adults.
Ms. Duncan notes, “Historically, activities in the arts have been placed under the "activities" category of HUD housing compliance, and service coordinators are not allowed to conduct activities. The program I have developed broadens the definition of health programming to include activities in the arts. It is based on the work of Dr. Gene Cohen which indicated real health benefits to participation in creative activities conducted by professional artists. This opens the door for service coordinators to provide health programming which includes opportunities in the arts for life-long learning. Presenting at the NCOA-ASA conference allows me to spread this message.” A pilot program of Ms. Duncan’s “Aging, Wellness, and the Arts” model was implemented in November 2009 and has been conducted in over 80 HUD-subsidized senior housing properties in 21 states.
The Aging in America Conference is the largest gathering of a diverse, multidisciplinary community of professionals from the fields of aging, healthcare and education with over 4,000 attendees annually. It is a showcase for programs and projects that can be replicated, a forum for policy discussion and advocacy, and a prime source of information on new research findings in aging. Ms. Duncan was also a featured presenter at the national conference of the American Association of Service Coordinators in August 2010.
As Assistant Vice President at AHEPA Management Company, Ms. Duncan develops and supervises the Service Coordination Program for over 80 HUD-sponsored affordable senior housing complexes throughout 21 states. Recently, she organized the company’s annual Service Coordinator Annual Conference, Optimizing Our Strengths, held to enhance the education and skills of its service support professionals. Previously, Duncan served as Social Service Coordinator for the Indianapolis Senior Center, as Program Specialist for the Alzheimer’s Association, and as Director of Social Service and Public Relations for the Indianapolis Retirement Home.
An Indiana native, Ms. Duncan earned a Master of Science in Gerontology from the University of Indianapolis and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Indiana with a major in Communications and a minor in Recreation.
